Google Ads for Auto Repair Shops: Free Guide + Strategies

In today's digital world, relying solely on word-of-mouth is like trying to change a tire with a pair of pliers—it’s inefficient and frustrating. You need a modern tool, a solution designed to attract new customers to your shop. That tool is Google Ads, a Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising platform allowing you to target new customers when they need you most.

If you've heard the term but aren't sure how it fits into your business plan, you're in the right place. This comprehensive guide will break down everything you need to know about Google Ads for your auto repair business.

What are Google Ads (PPC)?

At its core, Google Ads is a Pay-Per-Click, or PPC, platform where advertisers pay a fee each time one of their ads is clicked. Think of it as renting a prime piece of real estate on the first page of a search engine like Google or Bing. Instead of trying to earn those top spots organically through Search Engine Optimization (SEO), which can take months or even years, you're essentially paying to jump the line.

Types of Google Ad Campaigns

Search campaigns

Paid search ads are the most common type of Google Ad campaign, allowing auto repair shops to target based on keywords. Shops can find new customers by bidding on keywords like “Oil change near me” or “Transmission shop Denver, Colorado.” This campaign type is effective because you can target local customers at the moment they are searching for help.

Display campaigns

Display PPC campaigns are another effective campaign type that shops can use to target customers with more creative ads. Display ads offer a visual component that could be a static image or a short video. Display ads can show across a wider audience and are not confined to just Google search.

Retargeting campaigns

Retargeting campaigns are exactly what they sound like. Mechanic shops can target prospects who have visited their website with ads that can display on other websites. For example, a customer could have visited your website (YourShop.com) and then bounced to Forbes.com. You can then show an ad on Forbes.com (and other websites) as they browse the web, so your shop can stay top of mind.

Video campaigns

Video campaigns are mainly used by auto repair shops to target customers on YouTube. You can target automotive DIY videos where users may run into issues and look for a shop instead.

How to set up your first Google Ad campaign

  1. Open a Google Ads account (if you haven’t already). Fill out your business information and attach your payment method. This is also a good time to delegate account access to other employees if needed.
  2. Start your keyword research. Identify the search terms your potential customers are typing into Google when they need help (e.g., “brake repair near me,” “check engine light diagnostics,” “mechanic in Houston”). If you need help finding the right keywords, you can start by asking the next customer who walks in your door, “How did you hear about us?”.
  3. Finalize your budget and bidding. Set the maximum amount you're willing to pay for a single click on your ad. This bid, combined with the quality and relevance of your ad, determines your ad's ranking position.
  4. Find your audience. Select which geographical areas you want to target with your ads. Most shops select a radius around their physical location to ensure they are targeting customers nearby.
  5. Add extensions. Extensions show up beneath your ad and can include your phone number or service-specific pages of your website. Extensions help you take up more room on Google and increase your chances of attracting a click.
  6. Publish. Once you publish your ads, your ads will go through an approval process and either go live or be rejected. You can always make edits and resubmit your ads if they are initially rejected.
  7. Monitor and analyze. Once your ads are running, you will be able to see clicks, impressions, cost, and other data in the Google Ads platform. You can even set up conversions and UTM tracking to see how many new customers are booking online appointments with your shop.

Should Mechanic shops use Google Ads?

The short answer is an emphatic yes. While many forms of marketing cast a wide net, hoping to catch a few fish, PPC marketing is like using a high-tech fish finder. For an auto repair shop, the "when" is just as important as the "who," and Google Ads excel at connecting you with customers at the moment of their highest intent.

Consider the mindset of a person who needs auto repair services. Their car is making a strange noise, a warning light is on, or worse, they're stranded on the side of the road. They aren't casually browsing; they have an urgent, specific problem that needs an immediate solution. What do they do? They pull out their phone and perform a Google search for a local mechanic.

This is where auto repair PPC shines. It allows your auto repair shop to appear at the very top of the results for those high-intent searches. You're not interrupting their day with an ad they don't care about; you are providing the exact solution they are actively looking for. This makes Google Ads one of the most effective marketing efforts for service businesses, especially in the emergency-driven auto repair industry. It levels the playing field, allowing dedicated local shops to gain immediate online visibility and compete effectively against large national chains.

Benefits of PPC Marketing for Auto Repair Shops

Integrating a well-managed PPC advertising campaign into your marketing strategy can deliver a host of powerful benefits that translate directly into more customers and higher revenue.

  • Immediate Traffic: Unlike email marketing or social media, a PPC campaign can start to drive traffic and generate phone calls almost overnight. Once your ad campaigns are approved, your shop can be visible to potential customers within hours, which is crucial when you have empty bays to fill.
  • Precise Targeting: PPC platforms offer incredibly granular targeting options. You can show your ads to people based on:
    • Location: Target users within a specific mile radius of your shop, in certain zip codes, or in an entire city. This ensures you’re not paying for clicks from people who are too far away to become customers.
    • Keywords: You target the exact automotive services you offer, from a simple oil change to complex engine issues.
    • Time of Day: Only want to run ads during your business hours to ensure someone is there to answer the phone? You can do that.
    • Device: You can bid more for mobile users, who are more likely to be in need of immediate help and use click-to-call features.
  • Budgetary Control: Worried about a runaway budget? With PPC, you're in the driver's seat. You set a maximum daily or monthly ad spend, and you'll never pay more than that amount. You can start small, test the waters, and scale your investment up or down based on your return on investment.
  • Measurable Results: This is a major advantage over traditional advertising. Every aspect of your PPC campaigns can be tracked. You can see exactly how many people saw your ad, how many clicked it, and how many of those clicks resulted in a phone call or a contact form submission.
  • Increased Brand Awareness: Even when users don't click on your ad, seeing your shop's name at the top of the search results builds familiarity and trust. When they see your name repeatedly for different service-related searches, you become a recognized authority in your local area. This boost in brand awareness is a valuable byproduct of a consistent PPC presence.

Effective PPC Strategies for Auto Repair Shops

Launching a campaign is easy; launching a profitable one requires a solid strategy. Simply throwing money at Google Ads without a plan is a quick way to burn through your budget. Here are the essential strategies to ensure your PPC ads deliver results.

Keyword Research

This is the foundation of your entire campaign. You need to get inside the heads of your target audience and think of keywords they would search for. Your keyword research should include:

  • Service-Specific Keywords: "brake pad replacement," "transmission repair," "car AC service."
  • Location-Based Keywords: "auto mechanic Dallas," "car repair shop 75201."
  • "Near Me" Keywords: These are huge for local service businesses. Google often appends "near me" automatically for mobile searchers.
  • Negative Keywords: Just as important is telling Google what not to show your ads for. Add negative keywords like "jobs," "training," "DIY," "parts," and "free" to avoid paying for irrelevant clicks from job seekers or people looking to do the work themselves.

You should note that each keyword has a different cost per click average depending on location and number of competitors. Bid on keywords that are important for your shop and fit your budget.

Compelling Ad Copy

Your ad copy is your 3-second elevator pitch. It needs to grab attention and persuade the user to click.

  • Highlight Your Strengths: What makes you different? Mention your ASE-certified technicians, warranties on parts and labor, free loaner cars, 5-star reviews, or your years of experience.
  • Include a Strong Call-to-Action (CTA): Be direct. Use phrases like "Call Now for a Free Estimate," "Book Your Service Online," or "Get a Quick Quote."
  • Use Ad Extensions: These are extra snippets of information that make your ad bigger and more useful. Use call extensions to add your phone number for easy click-to-call, and location extensions to show your address and link to Google Maps. Sitelink extensions can direct users to specific service pages on your website.

Optimized Landing Pages

A click is wasted if the user gets to your website and is confused or unimpressed. Your landing pages must be designed to convert visitors into customers.

  • Relevance is Key: If your ad promises "Brake Repair Services," the landing page should be all about your brake repair services, not your homepage.
  • Mobile-First Design: The majority of auto repair searches happen on mobile phones. Your page must load fast and be easy to navigate on a small screen.
  • Clear Contact Information: Your phone number and address should be prominently displayed and clickable.
  • Build Trust: Feature customer reviews, testimonials, photos of your shop, and logos of any certifications (ASE, AAA Approved, etc.).

Bidding and Campaign Management

Google Ads is not a "set it and forget it" strategy. To truly succeed, you need to actively manage and optimize your campaigns.

  • Structure Your Campaigns: Create separate PPC campaigns for each major service category (e.g., Brakes, Engine, Transmission, General Maintenance). This allows you to tailor your ads and landing pages for maximum relevance, which Google rewards with a better Quality Score and lower CPC.
  • Track Everything: Implement conversion tracking to monitor not just clicks, but actual leads—phone calls and form submissions. This is the only way to measure true campaign performance.
  • Continuously Optimize: Regularly review your metrics. Pause keywords that aren't performing, test new ad copy, and adjust bids to focus your ad spend on what drives the best conversion rates.

How Much Should Automotive Shops Invest in Google Ads?

This is the most common question, and the answer is: it depends. The right budget for your shop is influenced by several factors, including your location's competitiveness, the specific services you're advertising, and your overall growth goals. A shop in rural Nebraska will have a much lower cost per click than one in downtown Los Angeles.

Instead of focusing on a magic number, think about your investment in terms of objectives and ROI. A good starting point for a small to medium-sized auto repair shop might be anywhere from $500 to $2,000 per month. This initial investment allows you to gather enough data to see what works.

The most important metric isn't the upfront price; it's the return on investment. If you spend $1,000 on Google Ads in a month and it brings in five new repair jobs that generate $4,000 in revenue, your marketing efforts have delivered a 4x return. From that perspective, the initial cost is more than justified.

For shops new to this space, partnering with a digital marketing agency that specializes in Google AdWords services can be a wise investment. They have the expertise to avoid common pitfalls, maximize your budget, and accelerate your path to profitability.

Final Thoughts

In a competitive market, standing still means falling behind. Pay-per-click advertising is the fuel your marketing strategy needs to accelerate past the competition. It offers an unparalleled ability to connect with customers at their moment of need, providing immediate, targeted, and measurable results.

By conducting thorough keyword research, crafting compelling ads, building high-converting landing pages, and diligently tracking your campaign performance, you can transform your online presence from a sputtering engine into a finely tuned machine that consistently delivers new customers. It’s time to take control of your lead generation and explore what a well-executed auto repair PPC campaign can do for your shop.

Tekmetric Co-Founder Prasanth Chilukuri Featured in latest issue of Texas CEO Magazine

June 27, 2022

When it comes to starting a business, you have a lot to consider.

How are you going to make sales?

Are your operations in order?

How will you approach legal, HR, and marketing?

But it’s important to not forget about one key part to getting your business off the ground: funding.

You’ll want to be well-versed in what to look for in a potential partnership whether you’re in the startup phase, the expansion phase, or even in a plateau phase.

By better preparing now, you’ll set your company up for future success.

Recently, Prasanth shared his thoughts about different kinds of funding with Texas CEO Magazine. You can read the full piece here, or check out some of the highlights below.

Determine The Right Equity Path For Your Business

The first step for any business owner should always consist of researching and selecting the right method of funding for your company. Once you’re confident in your company’s business model, your company’s current state, and any future aspirations for your company, you’ll want to determine the right equity path that can take your company where you want it to go.

1. Venture Capital

Venture capital is a more traditional route and is optimal for new entrepreneurs. If you have an idea for a potential business venture but aren’t sure exactly what to do with it just yet, venture capital could help you secure funding so that you can bring your ideas to fruition.

With venture capital, your partner will purchase a significant portion of the company, and in turn will offer support and guidance to nurture your company’s growth

2. Growth Equity

If your company has already excelled in the starting phases and needs another boost to continue expanding, you’ll want to consider growth equity—otherwise known as “rocket fuel.” Growth equity tends to be founder-centric and offers more autonomy and room to remain true to your company’s original core values and business model.

3. Private Equity

Companies that have reached the later stages of their business’ lifecycle may opt for private equity.

This route can be a good contender for companies that are at risk of going under due to lack of profits. Private equity can give your company the boost needed to prevent it from closing up shop.

Whoever you choose to partner with will take a large portion of your company’s ownership and will make significant changes to the company. However, the private equity route tends to yield bigger checks.

What Did Tekmetric Do For Funding?

Prasanth knows how important the right funding for your company is.

Prior to 2021, Tekmetric was in the startup and the small business stage, so the initial funding from friends and family was an avenue that worked out really well at the time

After 2021, Tekmetric started to expand exponentially. Tekmetric’s Co-CEOs and Co-Founders Prasanth and Sunil Patel realized that more growth could be possible if they changed from their personal network funding to the growth equity route.

Growth equity provided funding for additional initiatives, such as marketing, product research, and hiring. In turn, Tekmetric was able to pursue the vision that Prasanth and Sunil had outlined during the company’s beginning stage.

Find The Right Partner

You’ll want to be intentional about choosing any of your partnerships as a business owner, especially when it comes to finding the right funding partnerships.

The partner you decide to go with will help determine what your business’ tone and future will be like.

As you’re determining the right partnerships for you, ask yourself 5 questions:

  • Is the partner aligned with my business goals?
  • Do I trust this partner with my team and my business?
  • What will my relationship with this partner look like?
  • How much day-to-day involvement in my company does this partner expect?
  • Does this partner provide a reasonable amount of funding to support my goals?

No matter what equity direction you take, you’ll want to find a partnership dynamic that works for you, your business, and your team. As you’re choosing the right partner, remain transparent about any goals and expectations you have in mind for your company.

You won’t want to choose a partner solely based on numbers. The partnership will be a long-term business relationship—a marriage of sorts—and you should treat the partnership with thoughtfulness and respect.

What Did Tekmetric Do For Funding Partnerships?

At Tekmetric, Prasanth and Sunil knew whichever partner they selected to provide funding would play a significant role in the company’s future, and would have a strong impact on Tekmetric’s overall tone, goals, and growth.

At the time Prasanth and Sunil started looking for partners, Tekmetric was a well-established name throughout the auto repair industry, so they wanted a partner that would work alongside them, not just someone who would give them money and stay at a distance.

Eventually, Tekmetric found the right partner—one who is not only sensitive to the company’s needs but also the needs of Tekmetric’s customers.

Tek-Tip: Always ensure your partnerships are a two-way street.

As an auto repair shop management system, Tekmetric has long realized the importance of mutually beneficial partnerships. We’ve established partnerships along the way with companies like Mechanic Advisor and Advance Auto Parts Pro Solutions to help us better meet our customers’ needs. In fact, Tekmetric has more than 30 industry partners (and counting) to ensure the most seamless possible experience.

Want to assess your general partnerships beyond funding? Find out what you should consider as a shop owner before entering into an auto repair shop partnership here.

Remain True To Your Business Yourself

No matter the equity path you choose to go or the partnerships you choose to take, you’ll want to stay true to your business’ core values and who you are as a business owner.

Rather than cutting corners, you can opt for the best possible solutions.

Prasanth said it best: financial support and equity can be confusing, and it’s easy to get lost in the numbers and forget why you started your business in the first place. However, the right partner will make all the difference.

After all, if you are putting significant time and effort into your idea, your company, and your team, you should expect a partner who supports your continued success long into the future.

The Successful Auto Tech Software Scaling Formula

He and Sunil Patel started Tekmetric in 2016, and today, it’s become the preferred auto tech software in the auto repair industry.

Prasanth’s success prompted Authority Magazine to contact him for an interview on the formula for scaling success.

Below are just a few excerpts of Prasanth’s interview with Ken Babcock (CEO of Tango), along with bonus content for any entrepreneur seeking to scale their business.

Scaling with People

Let’s look at each component.

The Right People.

First, you have to have the team that serves your company the best.

At Tekmetric, we learned this the hard way. We had a phenomenal idea — but our first team wasn’t comprised of exactly all the people we needed.

And that meant we failed in the first round. It was disappointing, but we learned a valuable lesson, and the next round, we hired people based on the talents we knew we needed. It was the right move, and it set us in the right direction toward success. In fact, many of the team members from this second group are still with us today.

Tekmetric’s People Today: The Best Support in the Industry

Today, Tekmetric has a growing team of people working in various departments, such as customer support, sales, product development, and human resources.

Walk into our Houston headquarters, and you’ll see people from all backgrounds catching up on their week, discussing the next product update, or talking about the future of our company over a cup of coffee.

A large portion of our team works remotely. We have employees across the United States, including:

  • Cleveland, OH
  • Washington, DC
  • Denver, CO
  • San Diego, CA

But no matter where our team members are, one of the big things they have in common is that they’re passionate about providing Tekmetric’s customers with the best experience and support possible.

Our support team in particular is easy to get in touch with.

Customers don’t have to spend hours listening to annoying “waiting” music on the phone or anxiously sitting in front of their computers for a response to a support ticket.

The Tekmetric support team acts to get questions answered quickly and any issues resolved fast.

After all, auto tech software needs to move at the pace of the auto repair industry—fast—and support is an important part of that process.

Sound like you would fit in? Join us!

Scaling with Direction

You also have to know the direction you’re going.

Having the idea is great; getting it right as you grow is vital. You may not have the details fully fleshed out, but you must know what you want to do and the tools you need to get there.

I’ve always said, if you have a goal in mind, and you don’t know how to get there, then you’re doing something right.

If you do know how to get there, you’re not thinking big enough. Think long and hard about what you want your business to look like.

Once you figure out those initial steps and orient yourself in the right direction, you can think ahead to challenges like growing and scaling.

Tekmetric’s Direction Today: Driving the Auto Repair Industry Into the Future

The Tekmetric team keeps a close eye on what’s happening in the auto repair industry so that we can stay one step ahead when it comes to driving the auto repair industry into the future.

For example, Tekmetric listened to its customers’ desires for a true two-way texting feature, which enables shops and their customers to communicate more seamlessly than ever before.

Tekmetric also frequently adds to its list of integrations with industry-leading tools so that shop owners can set up workflows that work best for them.

And Tekmetric listens to what shop owners, technicians, and service advisors are saying, taking their feedback and suggestions into account.

We know that we cannot do this on our own, and respect the contributions of people throughout the industry.

Businesses are buckling down and tightening their checkbooks in an effort to control expenses to avoid or reduce the effects of a potential recession.

But in the auto repair industry, there are unique opportunities that come with uncertainty in the market – and that’s more business opportunities.

Tekmetric CEO Sunil Patel Talks Mindset and Growing Your Auto Repair Business

“If you are interested in picking up a new hobby like boating, you’ll do everything you can to learn more and more and more. Why can’t you do that with your auto repair shop?

Is it because it’s boring?

Is it because it’s not the same?

It doesn’t excite you as much as your hobby would?

If you take a second and stop to think, you’ll realize you can have any hobby in the world if you focus on your repair shop and get it to where it needs to be.

There is no waiting for the right person to walk through the door. There is no waiting for the right technician."

"It has to happen right now, today."

Tekmetric Co-CEO and Co-Founder Sunil Patel recently joined Kelsey Outram on the LIFT Your Shop Podcast to talk tech, mentorship, and transforming your auto repair business.

From medical school to law enforcement, Sunil tried his hand at a variety of fields over the years, but eventually all roads led him to founding Tekmetric with Prasanth Chilukuri in 2016.

Tekmetric quickly became the preferred shop management system in the auto repair industry.

And if you ask Sunil why, he’ll say it’s all about mindset.

If you’re a shop owner who has been feeling stuck, here are six steps you can take to shift gears.

1. Define Your Goals

“When you really set your mind to something, it subconsciously changes how you behave as a human, as a person. And you hone in on what you’re trying to accomplish and you accomplish that task.”

Here are some examples of goals you might hear people talk about in the auto repair industry:

  • “I want to make one million dollars in revenue this year."
  • “I would like to add another bay to the shop by the end of the year."
  • “I want to open another location in 2023.”

What do these goals all have in common? They are specific, achievable, and easy to track.

In the same way that it’s difficult to plan a vacation without having a travel destination in mind, it’s difficult to achieve a goal if you never set one in the first place.

Knowing where you want to go is the first step toward figuring out a roadmap to get there.

2. Accept That Change is Part of the Process

“Forget about the technology and software and all that for a moment, and ask yourself this: Are you happy with where you are today running your shop? And if the answer is no, then dig deeper.”

Whether your shop is looking to switch parts suppliers or invest in a new shop management system, change can be intimidating.

Many shops experience growing pains, but keeping an open mind is essential to driving your business forward.

Sunil Patel on How Tekmetric is Revolutionizing the Auto Industry

Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Tekmetric Sunil Patel joined Editor Chris Jones on Ratchet+Wrench Radio to talk about how shop management software suites are changing the landscape of the auto repair industry, especially when it comes to building relationships and communicating effectively.

Sunil also touched on the history of some of Tekmetric’s relationships and how Tekmetric makes sure the voices of shop owners are heard.

Listen here, or catch some of the highlights below.

Note: some of the following answers have been condensed for clarity and brevity.

Relationship-Building 101: Laying Down a Solid Foundation

Jones: The last time we saw each other was at WorldPac STX in Orlando. And that’s where you guys announced a partnership with Advance Auto Parts. I know a lot of our readers have seen it, but can you share a little bit about the details with our audience, just from your own words and perspective?

Patel: So we’ve had a great relationship with Advance Auto Parts for a very long time. And we wanted to leverage the relationship to try to get more shops to use Tekmetric, and it just happened to be the right place, right time.

Side note: For those that don’t know, Advance Auto Parts actually owns WorldPac and Sunil Patel’s relationship with both goes way back. Before co-founding Tekmetric, Patel owned an auto repair shop that was one of the highest purchasers of parts from WorldPac in Houston for almost a decade.

Jones: That’s kind of cool to see how the relationship evolved over the years.

Patel: It’s a big company. It’s not like turning a speedboat, it’s like turning a steamship. Sometimes it just takes time to let some of these relationships play out. It affects so many people. We have to be absolutely sure of how this is going to play out, and how it’s going to work.

Using Shop Management Software to Get Everyone on the Same Page

Jones: So let’s talk about shop ownership a little bit. You were once a shop owner kind of in the Dark Ages before we had these robust shop management software suites. What was it like for you to operate on these limited tools?

Patel: You know, it was tough. Customers didn't always respond back, and we would always have to follow up with a phone call. There was always a disconnect.

We were probably ahead of our time 12 years ago trying to get some of this stuff out. Tekmetric used a combination of manual processes and text messaging. Text messaging was pretty popular back then, but MMS or multimedia messaging or picture messaging was not so popular.

So adding that in the mix with communications and whatnot into one platform has been very paramount to the success of our company because it closes the loop between the vehicle owner, the shop owner, the technician, and the service writer.

It keeps everybody on the same platform and communications thread. That way everybody has full visibility into what's going on with the repair of that vehicle to ensure a timely repair—ultimately making the customer happy.

Scaling Your Auto Repair Business With Real-Time Reports

Prasanth Chilukuri understands the challenges that shop owners face each day with gaps in their efficiency and margins, which is why he co-founded Tekmetric with Sunil Patel in 2016.

Vehicle Service Pros published some of Prasanth’s tips for strategically growing an auto repair business with a shop management system like Tekmetric.

You can access his full piece here, or check out some of the highlights below.

Balance Is Key to Making Better-Informed Business Decisions

Shop owners make countless daily decisions that affect their customers, their team, and their business.

Making good business decisions is essential to keeping everyone happy and keeping the lights on in the shop, but how do you know what the right decision is?

According to Prasanth, the key to any successful business is finding the right balance between soft skills like intuition or relationship-building and hard skills like data analysis.

Both types of skills are important, but knowing when to employ each one is the trick to making better-informed decisions and growing your business.

Intuition is useful when shop owners have to make split-second decisions and often goes hand in hand with interpersonal skills. The auto repair industry isn’t just about cars, after all; it’s about people, too.

By learning how to pick up on cues and anticipate the needs of customers, employees, and vendors, shop owners can foster long-lasting relationships that grow alongside their business.

Of course, there’s only one way to know whether your shop is truly turning a profit: look at the numbers and analyze the results. Data can support any hunches you have about the health of your business, for better or for worse, so you can plan accordingly.

But if your shop is still tied to manual methods, gathering key information about parts usage and labor costs is probably not easy or convenient.

Why Manual Methods Just Can’t Keep Up

A shop management system might not be able to make business decisions for you, but it can help shop owners make sense of their key metrics and data. According to Prasanth, looking at the cold, hard facts is essential to boost the efficiency and profitability of the shop.

The science of data might seem contrary to the art of intuition at first, but they’re more related than you might think. As Prasanth describes, data can add support to a shop owner’s intuition or observations and reveal key information that can’t necessarily be gathered from conversations with customers and employees.

Unfortunately, trying to sort through the shop’s data by hand can be exhausting and often means missing family dinners to crunch the numbers after hours. And manually calculating daily, weekly, or monthly metrics can quickly become a headache with much larger room for human error.

Without real-time reporting tools, inventory counts and gross profit can’t necessarily be trusted and will always provide an out-of-date view of your business at best.

Being tied to manual processes for data collection also means being tied to the shop and losing out on valuable face-to-face time with the customers supporting the business.

As a result, shop owners are often left making the difficult decision between nurturing their intuition and building relationships, or focusing on the data and shop profitability when both are essential to the long-term success of the business. With Tekmetric, you can do both.

Real-time reports are always available with numbers that are already calculated and organized.

A bird’s eye view of the shop gives shop owners the power to tailor their business plan and strategy by:

  • Adjusting parts and labor matrices to maximize margins
  • Extending or removing a running promotion
  • Deciding to add more people to the team
  • Knowing when it’s the right time to expand the business with new bays or by opening a new location

Transforming the Shop Owner Experience with the Right Tools

As a shop owner, you have the ability to tune into your shop’s performance metrics, employees’ bandwidth, and overall profit margins with a few clicks.

Lucas Underwood and David Roman, hosts of the ASOG podcast, recently sat down with Tekmetric CEO Sunil Patel at the Vision Hi-Tech Training and Expo in Kansas City, Kansas.

Sunil shared some key insights into facing challenges, embracing change, streamlining processes, prioritizing customers, and the power of “always starting with why.”

Note: the following answers have been condensed for clarity.

On Facing Challenges and Handling Stress

ASOG: We spoke with PJ Leslie (Tekmetric’s Business Development Director) recently, and he was talking to us about your ability to take anything that comes your way and overcome it.

PJ shared with us that no matter the circumstance, you’re always able to say, “We’re going to get through this, and we’re going to make something from it.”

You created an amazing thing despite the adversity that you’ve faced. How were you able to do that?

Patel: My wife and I went through some hard times with our daughter, Brianna, about a year ago.

And what I told my wife during that time was, “You know what? I’m ready to face this challenge.

We’re going to find the best doctor we can find and the best solution for her. And Brianna will live life one day at a time.

We’re not going to think about the future, we’re going to live life today.”

Since that day it’s been almost ten months and everything has been great. She’s doing beautifully.

A key component to handling stress is delegation.

You’ve got to let go of some of your responsibilities no matter how unnerving it is. Remind yourself that you can continue to keep your momentum on your shop, business, and goals by delegating.

That’s why you have a team—so you can tackle and conquer each task that comes your way.

On Embracing Change and Switching Gears

ASOG: You’ve gone from being a physician to a police officer to an auto repair shop owner, and now you’re the co-founder and CEO of Tekmetric. What made you want to go from physician to shop owner?

Was there a rock bottom for you? Was there a point where you decided, “I don’t want to be a physician any longer?”

Patel: I was fortunate that I never hit rock bottom. I’ve always tried to live in the moment. And I’m always intrigued by learning new things. With that being said, it took me going from industry to industry to learn the skills that helped form Tekmetric.

Let’s say you set a goal for yourself to go to the gym more often.

Now, if you don’t want to go to the gym, then you will keep training your mind to make sure that gym is just not your thing. It’s not until you have a breakthrough that you are able to change your mindset.

You have to train your reticular activating system (RAS), a network of nerve pathways located in the brain stem that mediates overall behavior, so that going to the gym becomes a positive activity.

Along with reminding yourself that you want to go to the gym, write down when you want to make the change and why.

Let’s say this is your goal, 'In March 2023, I will feel great, I will look great, my clothes will fit me better, and I can hear my family and friends saying ‘You’ve done a fantastic job.'

You have to recognize and reframe each limiting belief that is preventing you from achieving your end goal. An example of a limiting belief would be something along the lines of, "Ah, I’ve had a long day, I can just go to the gym tomorrow.' You have to reframe it to, 'I’ve had a long day, time to finish strong with a trip to the gym.'

You have to be very intentional. You truly have to want to reach the finish line.

This concept goes for shop owners, too. If you’re wanting to expand your shop, you’ll need to change the way you’re running your business. You can do that with shop management software.

How 500 High-Performing Auto Repair Shops Reacted to COVID-19

Remember spring and summer of 2020? A lot of us are probably trying to forget and move forward, and we feel you. It was a scary time period for everyone, including the automotive repair industry.

Last April, auto shop owners were wondering, are my customers going to come into the shop? If people stay inside, are they going to drive less? If they drive less, are they still going to come into the shop as frequently? What if other industries are affected, and people have less money for repairs?

We were nervous like everyone else. But anyone who knows Tekmetric knows that we’re committed to driving the auto repair industry forward; we wanted to answer these questions and put Auto Repair Professionals’ minds at ease.

We also wanted to enable shops to not only endure the pandemic but also grow and come out stronger than ever before.

Strength in Numbers

If there’s one thing that makes us feel confident, empowered, and like we know what’s going on, it’s numbers. (Tracking shop performance and providing insights is kind of our thing).

We’ve seen the power of metrics in shops across America, and we know that customers, service advisors, technicians, and the entire auto repair industry benefit when auto shop owners can make informed decisions.

So we launched the TM-500 Index. The TM-500 tracks the Average Repair Order and Car Count of five hundred auto repair shops located across the United States. But data don’t mean squat if it ain’t easy to read. The TM-500 let’s users sort data by time and region so they can quickly explore trends.

Want to know the ARO and Car Count between the months of June and November of 2020? Simply set the time period “by month,” and the TM-500 will generate an easy-to-read graph.

Want to know if shops in midwest states had a higher or lower Car Count than southwest states last summer? Simply set the time period you want to observe, and hover over different regions on a map of the United States to learn how they performed.

Just as the Tekmetric system for auto repair shop management gives shop owners better insights into their shops, the TM-500 gives Auto Repair Professionals better insights into their industry.

But knowing is only half the battle.

A Catalyst for Digital Transformation

The auto repair industry has lagged behind almost every other service industry in how we utilize technology. Almost anyone with a smartphone can order a pizza, sushi, enchiladas, or any other food they want and track it while it’s being delivered to their door.

Meanwhile, someone paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a new transmission still has to go in-person and deal with a half-legible piece of paper that feels greasier than the pizza and enchiladas put together!

But we get it. People are sometimes reluctant to change. For many auto shop owners, however, the COVID-19 pandemic was the “now or never” moment to fully digitize their shops.

In 2020, Tekmetric prioritized the rollout of several features we had been working on to help shops provide their customers with the experience they’ve come to expect in almost every other part of their lives. In April of 2020, we rolled out Text-to-Pay, allowing shops to invoice and collect payment via text message.

In November of 2020, we rolled out True Two-Way Texting to make it easy for service advisors and customers to communicate throughout the entire repair process.

Combined, these two features enabled Tekmetric users to provide a completely touchless experience to their customers without sacrificing the quality of their work or customer service.

Much like in other industries, customers who bring their cars in for repairs appreciate the extra service and transparency of a more enhanced, digitally assisted customer experience.

As we watched many shops grow by using Tekmessage and Tekmerchant, we kept an eye on the overall performance of the TM-500. We were able to see when shops began to bounce back in summer after an early slump, and developed other understandings about where the industry was headed.

Over time, we have added new metrics to the TM-500 such as state-by-state Labor Margin, Parts Margin, Effective Labor Rate, and Car Count to gain a more complete picture of these high-performing shops.

What Have We Learned Since the Onset of the Pandemic?

When making conclusions about where the industry is going, we like to be informed by both quantitative and qualitative data.

The numbers give us a factual look at what’s gone up or down, and talking to people in the industry helps us make correlations between how certain behaviors, processes, and principles affect these trends.

Between the data we gathered from the TM-500 and the feedback we were able to gather from talking to auto shop owners, here’s what we have learned.
